Shipping Market Update: Softer Europe Rates, Changing Routes and Inland Delivery Risks
Skystar Shipping Agencies ·
7 October 2026
Ocean freight prices on key Asia to Europe trades have eased, but lower rates are arriving alongside changes to sailing schedules and inland transport conditions. For Indian exporters and importers, the useful question is whether the booked service, destination handling and final delivery plan still fit the shipment.
Ocean freight: Europe rates ease, US East Coast holds steady
Freightos reported in its 6 October update that its weekly Asia to Northern Europe ocean benchmark fell 3%, while the Asia to Mediterranean benchmark declined 2%. Its Asia to US East Coast benchmark was unchanged. These are broad trade benchmarks, not quotations for India origin cargo or an indication that every carrier has reduced its prices.
Freightos also reported softer China to North America and China to Northern Europe air benchmarks over the holiday period. That movement should not be treated as a prediction for Indian air exports, where pricing depends on the airport pair, airline, cargo requirements and available capacity.
Suez routing changes need a shipment level check
Maersk's 7 October Asia Pacific update says four additional Gemini services are transitioning from Cape of Good Hope routing to the Suez Canal. Implementation varies by service and voyage. The announcement does not establish a universal return to Suez or guarantee a shorter journey for an individual booking.
The same update warns that Golden Week schedule adjustments can leave wider gaps between selected departures. It also says weather affected Asian port operations are recovering, while vessel schedules may take longer to normalize.
For an India to Europe shipment, confirm the actual routing, transshipment connection and revised arrival estimate before making delivery commitments. A network announcement alone is not a confirmed sailing plan.
Air freight: conditions remain different by origin and route
Maersk reports that fewer connections through parts of the Middle East have redirected some cargo flows and that South Asian origins have received additional volumes. Space and transit times can therefore vary substantially between routes.
For urgent or temperature sensitive cargo, Skystar recommends checking the available itinerary, handling arrangements and delivery window together, rather than selecting a service on price alone.
East Africa: rainfall advisory concerns the inland journey
In a 6 October advisory, Maersk flagged potential disruption during the October to December rainfall period in East Africa. The carrier identified risks to road access, truck availability, terminal handling and cargo collection. It stressed that the timing and severity remain uncertain and vary by location. This is a planning advisory, not confirmation that all regional ports or roads are disrupted.
For door to door movements, check receiving site access and onward transport before dispatch. Cargo that reaches the port on time can still face a delayed inland delivery.
Europe: Rhine low water affects some barge movements
Maersk's 6 October Rhine advisory identifies low water restrictions and applicable surcharges for affected container barge transport. It also warns that loading guarantees cannot be provided below specified water levels at Kaub and Duisburg Ruhrort. These conditions concern affected inland services, not every shipment entering Europe.
If your delivery uses a Rhine barge connection, confirm the current surcharge, loading availability and feasible rail or road alternatives when the inland leg is booked.
What to check before confirming an October shipment
Ask for the named service and departure, quote validity, applicable surcharges, destination free time and inland delivery arrangements. For reefer or pharmaceutical cargo, agree the temperature requirements and handling plan before equipment is allocated.
